Former Real World Filipina Cast Member Ruthie Alcaide Educates Students on Alchohol Abuse

By: Caitlin Gath /The Daily Cardinal - April 25, 2008

Ruthie Alcaide, cast member of the 1999 season of MTV’s Real World: Hawaii, spoke to UW-Madison students Thursday about alcoholism and race relations.

As a cast member, Alcaide gained a notorious reputation as a party girl after passing out because of alcohol poisoning and then being asked to leave the house and enter rehab.

After overcoming her problems with binge drinking, she shed some light on the importance of alcohol education.

“One of the biggest things is education. It’s not that alcohol is a bad thing, it’s that we’re sheltered from it … and then you get a taste of it and can’t stop,” Alcaide said.

Alcaide emphasized that drinking is all about choices.

Filipino Americans on the Rise in California Politics

Bay Area, April 21 /Asia Week/

Filipino American representation overdue in California Legislature: Trailblazers such as Royal Morales, Cas Tolentino, Al Mendosa, Alice Bulos, Rodel Rodis, Dennis Normandy, Alex Esclamado and Mona Lisa Yuchengco, all shared the passion of fighting for Filipino American political recognition.

Tessie Guillermo, Mona Pasquil, Kevin Acebo, Irene Bueno, Vida Benavides, Gloria Caoile and fellow AsianWeek columnist Emil Guillermo, continued the legacy by establishing identities within the current national, state and local API political landscape. However, beyond California local politics and in spite of their high demographic numbers, I can only recall one Filipina American congressional candidate, Gloria Megina Ochoa, and four Filipino American Assembly candidates: Larry Asera, Henry Manayan, Christopher Cabaldon and Arlie Ricasa.

Why have there been no victories for Filipino Americans at the state and federal levels in California so far? Some have explained that Filipino Americans lack the financial resources other API ethnic groups provide for their candidates. Others point to a lack of a viable political network for Filipino American candidates to use at the state or national level. But Cabaldon and Ricasa, who both lost their first attempts for state office, are undeterred and vow to break the barrier for Filipino Americans this time around.

Cabaldon has 12 years of experience on the West Sacramento City Council, gaining national recognition as mayor of West Sacramento for his successful efforts in stimulating economic development, and enhancing the reputation and quality of life for the city and region of Yolo County. His career as an education consultant in the California Legislature and achievements as mayor have made him one of the most touted young talents in API politics today.

His opponent, Mariko Yamada, has been a popular Yolo County supervisor since 2003. Their race has caused some splits among the local API community, but Cabaldon currently leads his opponent in money and endorsements.
Ricas is the immediate former president of the Sweetwater Union High School District Board and has been a trustee since 1998. She is the senior ranking Filipino American elected official in San Diego County. As former president of the San Diego County School Boards Association and an active civic leader, Ricasa was recognized as one of the “Twenty Outstanding Filipino Americans” in the U.S. and Canada.

Ricasa is a graduate of the California API Legislative Caucus Institute Capitol Academy, which provides the best and brightest local API elected officials with a three-day Capitol experience, exposing them to all facets of being a state legislator.

Hopefully, the year 2008 will be the year for Filipino Americans to break the glass ceiling in the state Capitol.

Pollie Awards recognition for Ron Wong: Ron Wong’s departure as chief deputy appointment secretary to Gov. Gray Davis provided him the opportunity to form his own company: Imprenta Communications Group, which specializes in targeting ethnic voters through direct mail, advertising and field campaigns.

This year, ICG received six Pollie Awards (the Oscars of the American Association of Political Consultants) in a variety of categories, including bilingual/multilingual and foreign-language newspaper advertising.

ICG has been recognized for redefining and setting the standard for political campaigns targeting API voters. “It’s not about simply translating pieces; it’s about truly understanding the voters, what moves them and how to get them to act. Delivering ethnic voters will only become more important as diverse communities will make the difference between winning and losing on Election Day,” Wong said.

The community is proud to have one of its own make its mark in an industry that was once void of API professionals.

Votes and money equal power: The Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association is spearheading an ambitious permanent absentee voter registration drive targeting voters in the Alameda and Santa Clara areas. Heavyweights behind this effort including program Chair Dr. Albert Wang, Hsing Kung, Sandy Chau, Johnnie Giles, Julian Chang and C.C. Yin of the finance committee. Ron Wong of ICG and Bill Wong of Bill Wong Consulting serve as consultants to the project.

Money, money, money: Two API icons, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta and former Washington Gov. Gary Locke, came to California last month to announce the creation of a new PAC called America’s Opportunity Fund. The goal of this new national fund is to support progressive candidates who are sensitive to the issues of people of color and ethnic minorities at the federal level in pivotal races, and to encourage communities of color to more fully participate in the electoral process. It looks like Asians are taking the lead in developing a powerful national multi-coalition PAC.

Documentary "Little Manila: Filipinos in the Heartland" airs in May

The documentary LITTLE MANILA examines the history of the Filipino culture in Northern California. Filled with chop-suey houses, gambling dens, and dance halls, Little Manila was once a bustling area in downtown Stockton, and home to a large number of Filipino immigrants coming to the United States. The half-hour program, airing on public television stations nationwide (check local listings), was produced by Filipino-American filmmaker, Marissa Aroy, the documentary is narrated by famed Hollywood producer, Dean Devlin (Independence Day, The Patriot). “Little Manila: Filipinos in California’s Heartland,” tells the immigrant story as Filipinos experienced it.

Known as “The City of Gold,” Stockton, California, became a major hub for Filipino immigrants coming to the U.S at the turn of the 20th century. By the 1930s, this lively area had the largest population of Filipinos outside of the Philippines. Little Manila was also the closest thing Filipinos had to a hometown. “I’ve never seen so many Filipinos in my life,” says longtime resident, Jimmy Ente, Jr. remembering his arrival in Stockton with his father.

Many Filipinos worked as farm laborers traveling up and down the west coast harvesting fruit and vegetables in California, Oregon, and Washington and working in the canneries in Alaska during the wintertime. But Stockton was where Filipinos could always return home. In the Delta region, Filipino farm workers were famously tied to the harvesting of asparagus, one of the toughest crops to pick in the California Central Valley. There they faced backbreaking work, low wages and at times, extreme racism. Despite the hardships, Filipino farm workers earned a reputation for being efficient and skilled workers.

With their newly found income — during the nation’s birth of the consumer culture — Filipino men sought out the American dream priding themselves on flashy tailored suits and new cars, and an active social calendar at local dance clubs. This was the heyday of Little Manila.

Yet the exuberance Filipinos felt in their new homeland did not help them become accepted into the mainstream American culture. Racial tensions and fierce competition for jobs during the depression culminated in clashes between whites and Filipinos all over the west coast. In Stockton, a bomb destroyed the front of the Filipino Federation Building. In 1934, the Tydings-McDuffie Act limited the immigration of Filipinos to 50 per year, divested Filipinos of their status as “nationals,” and renamed them “aliens.” By 1939, Filipinos endured the Repatriation Act, which asked Filipinos to go back to the Philippines and promise to never return to the U.S. Amidst the anti-Filipino sentiments, Filipinos were still able to organize farm labor unions and became a force to reckon with during labor strikes. Later, these leaders played a pivotal role in one of the great labor movements in American history collaborating with Cesar Chavez to create the United Farm Workers.

The Second World War was a turning point as men volunteered in mass to fight Japan. They formed the 1st and 2nd Filipino infantry regiments and were part of a mass naturalization ceremony taking the oath as American citizens. This was an important change for now they had the right to buy land and vote. After the war, the Filipino community once again flourished as new families discovered a sense of belonging that didn’t before exist. Little Manila was no longer a place of bachelors and the area once again thrived.

As time passed, the community began to move away; the area declined. City officials started to clear away ethnic neighborhoods to make way for redevelopment. The final segment of this documentary examines the last few remnants of the community, now barely recognizable and the efforts to save Little Manila’s last standing buildings now deemed as historical landmarks.

Historians, educators, and individuals, contributing to this documentary include, Dr. James Sobredo, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at California State University, Sacramento; Daniel Phil Gonzales, J.D. Associate Professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University; Dr. Dawn Mabalon, Assistant Professor, San Francisco State University; Demetrio Ente, Jr., a long-time Stockton resident; Jerry Paular and Mel La Gasca who both grew up in Stockton; Anita Navalta Bautista, a resident of Stockton; Angelina Candelario Novelozo, immigrant and daughter of Filipino labor leader Claro Candelario; historian Dr. Alex S. Fabros Jr.; and former United Farm Workers Organizing Committee VP, Andy Imutan.

LITTLE MANILA was produced by KVIE Public Television (Sacramento, CA) for its ViewFinder series and is distributed by American Public Television for syndication to public television stations nationwide. KVIE’s ViewFinder series is underwritten by Allied Insurance and SAFE Credit Union. For more information about KVIE, visit www.kvie.org.

Arnel Pineda - Journey's New Pinoy Rock Star

A typical stereotype of most Filipinos is that we are great entertainers, especially within the realm of impersonating others. Proof of this is when the band Journey recognized one Filipino in particular named Arnel Pineda. He is from the Philippines and now is the lead singer for Journey.

One of my favorite songs from Journey "Don't Stop Believing" is now being sung by a Filipino. Awesome!!! This song caught my attention when it was on the final episode of The Sopranos. To my amazement Pineda's voice is strong. I had goose bumps from the shock that it is a Filipino person actually singing this number one hit.

Be sure to put Arnel Pineda in the Filipino-American Hall of Fame because he is going to make some waves when Journey tours the United States. Check back often for updates on Pineda. In the meantime, watch the YouTube videos below and compare the old with the new.

Vanessa Hudgens new single Sneakernight releases on May 20

Vanessa Hudgens is definately a Pinay. She fits the typical stereotypes of Filipinos being great entertainers. She can sing, act, dance and look beautiful at the same time.

Now we won't talk about her photo scandal, but through the drama it has made her an even stronger Filipina. Proof of this is in the upcoming debut of her sophmore album entitled Identified. Look for it to launch on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. Also, be sure to listen and buy her new single from this album called Sneakernight. You can get a taste of it on her MySpace page before the official iTunes debut on Tuesday, May 20, 2008.

Her brand new single, Sneakernight, goes to show you that she is most definately a Filipina because she sings about shoes. Who had a shoe fetish? Why Imelda Marcos of course!!!
