The saying "No History No Self" was a common term used when I began college while attending many Filipino-American (aka Fil-Am) community events that involved history, music, politics, and culture. Growing up as a Filipino, I felt I didn't know enough of my heritage. Indeed I was Filipino by blood and experienced many Filipino cultural activities, but I really had no sense in the past history of my heritage. I've assimilated myself into American culture. However, I hung around lots of Filipinos.
Without knowing and appreciating the past am I truly Filipino? It's a big debate not only with Filipinos, but with many Americanized cultures. What's your opinion?
