Alliance Between the U.S. and Philippines is Commemorated


Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton commemorated the 60th anniversary of the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, saying it has provided for the common defense and helped to create cooperation between the two nations, while fostering a crucial bond over the past 60 years between two peoples.


The treaty was signed in 1951, when both nations faced a different world, one threatened by the spread of communism, Clinton said during ceremonies for the signing of the Manila Declaration with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert Del Rosario. The signing ceremony was held November 16 on board the Navy ship USS Fitzgerald in Manila Bay.
